Fraction Reflection

Fraction Reflection

This is an opportunity for you to reflect on your Maths teaching and learning this week. You can then put it up on your blog.

As a Learners:

What did I learn during the two different lessons? For the first lesson I didn’t learn anything but then in the second lesson I learnt alot about dividing fractions.

What could have been better?

In the first lesson they could have taught more and made it harder and in the second lesson it was perfect.

What were the strengths of my / our teaching?

The kahoot in the first lesson was okay and in the second lesson the math sheet test and the kahoot was perfect.

What could have been better?

What could have been better is our kahoot and our math sheet because we didn’t really have much time to make the lesson amazing.

What did I learn from being an observer?

I learnt how hard it is being a teacher (I also learnt that when I was being a teacher) and I learnt what It would be like if you were an actual observer.

Would you like the opportunity to teach children in another area of maths? Why or why not?

Yes, because I want to get better at my teaching skills.

Aviation Museum

 Aviation Museum

Report

                              By Reuben Walsh

20.5.21

At the Aviation Museum we learnt about flight, and how planes and helicopters lift off the ground. When we arrived at the Aviation Museum we met a friendly kind man called Duane and he showed us around. There was also this plane part that they used in a movie called Shadow in the Cloud. Once Duane showed us the plane part all of us (The buffalos) split into two groups. First my group and I went with this lady and also this man called Linda and Bob. And she showed all the pictures and models of the planes. Also she showed us all the different Australian badges and all the different New Zealand badges. Once we looked at all of the models, badges and photos we swapped groups and my group and I went with Duane. First Duane showed us all of the different planes and there was also an old car that my friend Jack M used to one. After we looked at all the planes the two groups got back together and we all walked over to the Helicopter place. We then learnt about a helicopter's thrust and how they lift. WE ALSO GOT TO GO IN IT.    THE END

 Why sport is better

Than music

By Reuben Walsh

Sport is better than music because music is just boring. Like all you do is just use your voice or an instrument and play (and sing) boring songs (sounds) all day. Whereas sport it’s more fun because you run all day and get fitter and fitter each day.

With music you will learn how to play (and sing) music well but in sport you learn how to run faster, get stronger and play multiples of other sports you either have played or haven't played before.

In sport and music you both can get rich and famous with each one. But in sport you get about $1000 every game and if you get a hat trick or player of the day probably $10,000. And in music you get about $1000 a song or 5000 if it is really really good

So there is my reason why I think sport is better than music. P.s.s. And let me be honest with you, music is blurgh so be on my side and Lets Play Some Sport.

Persuasive Writing

   Football Rules, Regulations and Positions

Introduction

Football is a really fun sport. I mean it. In football there are two teams, with eleven players on each side. There are 4 defenders, 3 midfielders, 2 wingers, 1 striker and 1 goalie. There are also some strict rules in football like no handballing or offside but we will get to that later.

Stubborn Leeds ensure winless end to stormy week for Manchester United   Take 2 as Reds must end 2,615-day wait - Man United vs. Liverpool Preview - Liverpool FC - This Is Anfield   Scott McTominay strikes in extra-time to fire below-par Manchester United past West Ham    Liverpool and Manchester United thrash out goalless draw which will please Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Positions

The goalkeeper's job is to save all the shots that are coming right to the goalie. The defender's job is to stop attacks and shots from outside the box. The midfielders job is to defend from the other midfielder’s and also the mid’s job is to play defence, mid, and even sometimes attack or wing. The wingers job is to use   great pace or dribbling ability so as to provide cut-backs or crosses from which strikers can score. The striker's job is to be positioned to the nearest opposing team's goal. The primary responsibility of striker’s is to score goals and to create scoring chances for other players. Striker’s may also contribute defensively by harrying opposition defenders and goalkeepers whilst not in possession.

Rules and Regulations

Like I said earlier, football also has some strict rules like no handballing or offside because, if you handball it, you will 1 get sent off and lose more and more players and 2 it could turn into a really rough fight with the players and also the crowd. The reason why offside is a rule is because even though to close isn’t a rule in football it still isn’t fair for the keeper when a hard shooter is coming right up to score. So that's why if the striker or any other player from the opposing team is behind the 4 defenders then it's an offside free kick from the other team.

Also in football there are 3 cards that the referee holds throughout the game. The colors of the cards are red, yellow and a new card that is a green color. The red card's job is to send people off for the entire game if they do a super bad foul. The yellow card’s job is a warning to warn the player if they commit a small foul. The green card’s job is to send the player off for 10 minutes if the player does a medium foul. Now we will talk about penalties and free kicks. First we will talk about penalties. Penalties are taken in about the middle of the box, and the box is a pretty big box. For a penalty to take place a player has to foul another player from the opposing team inside the box. Then one of the players from the team shoots with the ball on the small circle in the middle of the box. When the player is about to shoot, all the other players move out of the way so it is just the shooter vs the keeper. Now we will talk about freekicks, for a freekick to occur is the exact same as a penalty; the player has to foul the other player from the opposing team but outside of the box. Then one of the players from the team shoots with the ball on another small circle that the referee drew outside of the box. When the player is about to shoot some people either get out of the way or move aside a bit and then some other players stand on a line about 3-4 metres out in front of the shooter and that is called a wall. Then the player does a big kick and usually sometimes curves it because the shooter is about 10-12 meters out from the goal. Once the player has kicked it the people who'd moved aside would come into the box and the people who are in the wall would jump and try to head the ball out of the goal's path for going in. Finally we will talk about corners and throw-ins. First we will talk about corners, for a corner to occur the opposing team has to kick it behind their goalies goal and then one of the other players from the other team kicks it from the corner line. Then the player either passes it or boots it to the player or the goal. Now we will talk about throw ins. For a throw to occur one of the players has to kick it out on one of the lines that are parallel on each side on the pitch. Then one of the players from the other team throws to another player on their team. Finally we will talk about goal kicks. For a goal kick to occur one of the players from the opposing team has to kick it behind the goalies goal. Then the goalie will put the ball on the dot that the players kick the penalties on. Then the goalie will either boot the ball or pass it to one of their players.

The End

Hope you enjoyed reading and know you will properly know alot about football.

Horouta Waka Why I wan't to go

Why I Want to Go on Horouta Te Waka

Dear Chiefs, I am writing to you because there has been a lot of arguing about who will go on the waka and you won’t. Honestly I think I should go on the waka. Here are my 5 reasons.

1 I will do well on adventures and to Explore

Firstly I would like to go on the waka because I want to explore new lands with maybe new animals, fruit and food and nature. Also I can learn about new things like languages and nature, and teach other children about the new languages and nature.

2 I am the best navigator and can help navigate

Secondly I am the best navigator in Hawaiki because I am the only one who can navigate the stars, clouds, birds, tides and currents and the shallowness. Also I will help the waka go in the right direction and keep away from big waves and storms.

3 I am a good fisher and cook

Thirdly I am a good fisherman so I can catch the right fish like King fish, Snapper, Rainbow trout, Marlin and Salmon. I am also a good cook because everyday I have a plan for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Also my favorite dish which everyone in hawaiki loves is crumbed Snapper with squid rings, salad, tomatoes and chopped apples.

4 I am a good builder and knot tier

Fourthly you would want me on the waka because if the waka breaks I can fix it in less than 15 mins so the waka would be all fixed before it sinks. Also if one of the big knots breaks I can build a bigger and stronger knot to make the waka stronger and faster.

5 I am muscular and quick

Finally you will want me on the waka because I am muscular and quick so I can carry heavy things on and off the waka in a quick time. Also I am a good swimmer so if someone gets overboarded I can quickly save them so no one will drown cause I will be quick enough to save them.

Conclusion

So do you think I’m good enough to go travel on the waka after you have read this. Cause I know you will say yes cause aren't you a good chief, or are you.

The World of New Zealand Cricket and Boating

The World of New Zealand Cricket and Boating By Reuben Walsh

Introduction:

Cricket and boating are two very different sports but they are both one of my favorite sports. The last time the New Zealand cricket team won a cup was the 2015 world cup where they beat South Africa. And the last time the New Zealand boating team won a cup was the 2021 Americas world cup were they beat Luna Rossa (Italy) by 500 meters.

Cricket:

Cricket is a very fun sport. I mean it. If you don’t know what cricket is here's a quick video: What is Cricket?

So now you know what cricket is. The most recent cricket world cup was in 2019 where England beat New Zealand ( The black caps )

By one run it was an amazing match. Cricket has been played for centuries and we go all the way back to 1844 where the first ever cricket match was played was USA vs Canada. Then Canada won by 25 runs.. Cricket has been watched by thousands, played by millions and experienced by billions of people. Cricket is a bat and ball sport with two teams with eleven players on each side. The cricket team I support is New Zealand (The Blackcaps). I am half New Zealand and half England but about 5% more English but it's weird how I like the New Zealand Cricket and Boating team more than the English Cricket and Boating team. So there you know a bit about Cricket, so now let's get into some Boating and we will talk about the America's cup.

Boating (the america’s cup)

Boating is also a fun sport to watch and play. I have just started liking boating and I already know alot about the sport. Throughout you reading about this boating booklet it will all be about the America’s cup which happens every 4 years. The last America’s cup was this year,  where New Zealand won it when they were defending it. And again if you don’t know what boating is or the America’s Cup here is a video:

What is the America's Cup?

So now you probably know what boating and the America’s Cup is. Like it said on the video. It has been going for 170 years since 1851 and that is a long time. America’s Cup, one of the oldest and best-known trophies in international sailing yacht competition. It was first offered as the Hundred Guinea Cup on August 20, 1851, by the Royal Yacht Squadron of Great Britain for a race around the Isle of Wight. The cup was won by the America, a 100-foot (30-metre) schooner from New York City, and subsequently became known as the America’s Cup. The American winners of the cup donated it to the New York Yacht Club in 1857 for a perpetual international challenge competition. In 1987 the San Diego Yacht Club took control of the U.S. competition. In 1983, after American yachts (sponsored by the New York Yacht Club) had successfully defended the cup 24 times without a loss since the first defense in 1870, the Australian yacht Australia II won the cup. In the next race, in 1987, the Americans (now from San Diego) regained the cup. The controversial race of 1988, between the winning American 60-foot (18-metre) catamaran and a New Zealander 132-foot (40-metre) monohull, had to be decided in the courts and provoked a redefinition of the rules governing future races. For 1992, a new and faster yacht was designated as the International America’s Cup Class (IACC)—75 feet (23 m) in overall length—to race over an eight-leg 22.6-mile (36.4-kilometre) course. The 1995 event was run over a six-leg, 18.55-nautical-mile (34.4-kilometre) course. It was won by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, only the second victory by a non-American challenger in the history of the competition. The skipper of the New Zealand victory in 1995 was Russell Coutts, who also led New Zealand to a win in 2000; Coutts, skippering for a Swiss team, won a third consecutive victory in 2003. In 2007 the Swiss team, with Brad Butterworth as skipper, defended its title. An American team owned by businessman Larry Ellison, Oracle Team USA, recaptured the Cup in 2010 in a two-race competition that was delayed by numerous court battles. In 2013 the U.S. had one of the most-dramatic comebacks in sporting history: the American team (captained by Jimmy Spithill and racing in a newly designed 72-foot [22-metre] catamaran) was trailing New Zealand 8–1 in a best-of-17 series and then won the remaining eight races for the most-unexpected America’s Cup victory of all time. See also yacht.

Page 2

Since the 1920s the America’s Cup race has been between one defending vessel and one challenging vessel, both of which are determined in separate series of elimination trials. Each competing vessel must be designed, built, and, insofar as possible, outfitted solely in the country that it represents. The original terms of the America’s Cup donation imposed many disadvantages on challenging yachts. Not until 1956 was a clause eliminated that required a challenger to sail on its own bottom to the scene of the contest, forcing a heavier style of construction than that of the defender. Until 1995, the America’s Cup competition was a best four of seven races; from that year until 2007 it required five of nine races to win. From 1958 to 1987 each race was run over a six-leg 24-mile (39-kilometre) course by yachts of the so-called 12-metre class. (No measurement on the 12-metre yacht was actually 12 metres. The “12” was a result of a complicated mathematical formula used in the yacht’s construction.)

The End Hope you have now learnt about the America’s Cup and New Zealand Cricket.

Risky Mountain Climbing to School

 Risky Mountain Climbing to School

Introduction:

Every Day of every week of every month of every year I take the most devastating, most disastrous walk to school. It takes 5 hours to get to school every day and my school starts at ten o’clock so I have to get up at four thirty in the morning to get to school half an hour early.

What bad could happen ?:

The bad thing that could happen is if there's an earthquake, well you have to hold on tight because those beige, ancient rocks are not that stable so you need to hold on tight to something that's not under those old rocks or you might get crushed! Another bad thing that could happen is that if you slip it's a very long way down but those two things never happen and we never slip because we go with our parents.

Maths and Place Value Week 9

Maths Place Value Reflection Week 9 - To go on Blog Thinking about my learning in place value the parts I’ve improved upon have been (which concepts - get them from the subheadings on the test) . Give some examples eg I now know how many 10s are in a number eg there are 12 tens in 120. Next time I’ll improve on my decimals and dividing but I did like the decimals though. These could have been Mathletics, watching videos from the website, the workshops you attended or the Kahoots you were part of. The parts I really enjoyed were were the adding and subtracting the decimals. The parts that could be better would be the dividing 10, 100 and thousand

My Weekly Reflection for Week 8

What I learned this week was about decimal numbers and the long ‘I’ sound.

In Maths I learnt how to place decimal numbers and put them in order from smallest to biggest.

In Spelling I learnt about the long I sound easy and hard and this week I got 19/20 right because I got kaleidoscope wrong but last week I got 20/20 cause we did the easy last week and the hard this week.

Thinking about our value of responsibility, this is how I’ve been responsible this week.

My next steps are to get better at my smallest to biggest decimals and get better at the word kaleidoscope and also get better at all the long I sound and words, and all of the long sounds and words.

My person who I think has been the most responsible this week is Daisy because she has been very nice and caring and responsible for her stuff like when she left her bag unzipped or when she left her stuff out she would zip her bag back up or she would quickly put her stuff back in her tote tray so thats why I think her this week.

My Maths Reflection on Learning in Statistics  By Reuben 3.3.21

What I’ve got better at or improved upon.

I have now learnt about probability and that some events are more likely to occur or happen than others. You can even use fractions and percentages to show them. I have also learnt a bit more about diagrams because we learnt alot about diagrams in England but that was 3-4 years ago so I forgot a bit so it's good I learnt about diagrams again.

What I still need to work on:

I still need to work a bit more about diagrams and wee bit more on line graphs. And more on my statistics but I also will always be working on all of my maths even the 3 times tables.

What I enjoyed and what could be better.

I really enjoyed the Kahoots since they were fun plus playing the number spinner games where you had to guess which number might come up. Which helped me more with my statistics and knowing what number will come next. I would like us to reflect more because I love reflections. I think we could do them every lesson even it’s just speaking.
